Layoff At Wipro: Company Shuts Down Unit In Himachal Pradesh- Find Out Who’s Impacted

Various reports suggest that the closure of Wipro's Himachal manufacturing unit is a result of operational disruptions and huge financial losses. The company has also cited economic unsustainability as the reason behind the move.

A layoff has taken place at Wipro after the company permanently closed one of its manufacturing units in Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi. The decision, announced on May 24, 2025, follows ongoing labour unrest and a workers’ strike that began in December 2024. As of now, 80 employees from the unit are affected.

Employees said they were unaware of the company’s decision to shut down the unit. According to reports, employees arriving for their regular shifts were reportedly stopped at the factory gates by security and were informed of the closure. Many workers were in shock as they had claimed that they started working in December and were unaware of the company’s decision.

Reasons For The Closure

Various reports suggest that the closure of Wipro’s Himachal manufacturing unit is a result of operational disruptions and huge financial losses. The company has also cited economic unsustainability as the reason behind the move.

The firm has also cited economic unsustainability as the reason behind the move. Even though the company and the workers’ union were holding talks, they couldn’t agree on a solution. News reports also say that one major issue was the company’s refusal to drop police cases filed against some workers, which blocked the possibility of a final agreement.

Will The Workers Be Compensated?

Wipro has said it will provide all the legally required compensation and support to the employees who lost their jobs. However, the sudden layoffs have sparked large protests in the area. The workers’ union has now filed a formal complaint with the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and the Labour Department.

The closure of the Baddi unit- which was an important part of Wipro’s manufacturing work, is a major setback for both the local workers and the region’s industrial development. It’s worth noting that one Wipro factory in Baddi is still running.
