“The water level in Yamuna is not increasing due to rain in Delhi. But it is going up continuously because of the release of abundant water from Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage. I request you to ensure the release of water in limited quantities to control the further swell of water level,” said Kejriwal.

Kejriwal said that in coming days Delhi would host G-20 meetings and a flooded national capital would tarnish the nation’s image internationally.

45 years record broken in Delhi

The Yamuna crossed the danger mark of 205.33 meters in Delhi, inundating several low-lying areas along the river. The water level is dangerously close to touching the highest level mark of 207.49 metres, which was recorded in 1978. Both road and rail traffic on the old Yamuna bridge has been closed as Haryana has released excess water into Yamuna from the Hathinikund barrage in Yamunanagar.
