Uttar Pradesh banned the import of liquor from outside the state, citing a loss to the state government’s revenue. Officials said that the import of only one sealed bottle is allowed from Delhi or Haryana, be it by metro or by road. The official said the excise department will increase vigilance at metro stations and take legal action against those caught with more than one sealed liquor bottle brought from outside UP. Srivastava said that we will also try to increase awareness among people in UP to save passengers from inconvenience.

Apart from Delhi, DMRC’s metro rail network connects nearby cities like Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana and Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. Noida District Excise Officer Subodh Srivastava said that Delhi Metro has allowed commuters to carry two sealed bottles of liquor, but the rules of the Uttar Pradesh Excise Department will be applicable in the areas of UP.

Liquor is generally cheaper in Haryana and Delhi than in Uttar Pradesh. In the past, too, people who brought sealed liquor bottles from Delhi to Noida by road have been arrested on several occasions. In such a situation, action is taken under Section 63 (penalty for illegal import, export, transport, manufacture, possession, or sale) of the Excise Act, which is a non-bailable offence, an official said.
