The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued show cause notices to 89 educational institutions across the country for failing to comply with the Anti-Ragging Rules, 2009. These institutions include one IIT, several IIMs, central universities and state universities.
The UGC has clearly warned that if these institutions do not comply with the instructions mentioned in the notice, their financial aid may be stopped. In addition, such institutions may be marked as ‘non-compliant’ on the Commission’s website, and their recognition or affiliation may also be considered for termination in future.
The Commission has directed these institutions to submit information related to compliance with anti-ragging rules within 30 days and obtain online undertakings from all students. Also, it has been made mandatory to submit a detailed report of the efforts taken to prevent ragging.
The institutes to which this notice has been sent include National Institute of Design (Andhra Pradesh), IIM Rohtak, IIM Bangalore, IIT Palakkad, Nalanda University (Rajgir), IGNOU, and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The notice issued by UGC on June 9 states that despite repeated advice, reminder calls and intervention by the anti-ragging monitoring agency, these institutes have not submitted the required student declarations and compliance reports.
UGC Secretary Manish Joshi has said that such negligence is not only a violation of regulatory guidelines but also poses a threat to student safety, especially in view of the mental stress associated with ragging and the growing negativity on campus.
