Aamir Khan On His Age Gap Jodi With Genelia D’Souza In Sitaare Zameen Par: ‘Age Is No Longer A Barrier’

Aamir Khan has reacted to his age gap with Genelia D'Souza for the film 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. This is the first time they have been casted together.

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has teamed up with Genelia D’Souza in the much-awaited emotional drama ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. Their collaboration is surprising for fans and also sparked the conversation on age gap again. In the recent interview, the 59-years-old Mr. Perfectionist spoke of this and declared that age need not to be a problem in today’s cinema.

Keeping in mind how things have evolved, Aamir Khan pointed out that contemporary filmmakers are able to easily overcome age differences through technology and creative casting. Expressing his views, he told The Indian Express, “We have the advantage of VFX now. Earlier, if I had to play an 18-year-old, I had to rely on prosthetics — like Anil Kapoor did in Eeshwar (1989), when he played an 80-year-old. Today, you can look 80 or 40 or 20 on screen with seamless visual effects. So, age is no longer a barrier for actors.”

He also addressed the age gap between him and Genelia. The 2008 romantic comedy Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na was the first collaboration between Aamir Khan and Genelia D’Souza, co-starring with his nephew Imran Khan. Talking about teaming up with Genelia again, Aamir chuckled and said, “Yeah, I know. That crossed my mind, but I did that a long time back and Imran is around my age now.”

He added, “But that was a long time ago. And ab Imran bhi kaafi meri age ka ho gaya hai.”

‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is the Hindi adaptation of the popular Spanish Film Champions (2018). Directed by R.S. Prasanna (Shubh Mangal Saavdhan), the film traces a sports team coached by individuals with intellectual disabilities and reiterates themes of inclusion and guidance. Besides showcasing new fresh faces, the film subtly references Aamir’s classic Taare Zameen Par (2007) with a cameo appearance by Darsheel Safary.

The shoot was wrapped up in mid-2024, and it will hit theaters on June 20, 2025. Although Sitaare Zameen Par is Aamir’s third film outing after Salaam Venky and Laal Singh Chaddha, he asserts that the depth of the story and the scope for artistic expression are what led him back.
