Bollywood’s Blockbuster Which Sold Over 30 Crore Tickets In China And It’s Not Dangal, RRR, Or 3 Idiots

The film's iconic soundtrack by RD Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri also contributed to its enduring popularity.

In recent years, several bollywood films like Pathaan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Secret Superstar starring Zaira Wasim, as well as Andhadhun with Ayushmann Khurrana and Bajrangi Bhaijaan featuring Salman Khan, have achieved remarkable success at the global box office. However, there’s a classic from the 1970s that stands apart, setting a record that even today’s blockbusters haven’t been able to surpass.

Nasir Hussain directed the 1971 crime thriller Caravan, starring Jeetendra and Asha Parekh in the lead roles, alongside Aruna Irani, Mehmood Jr, Helen, Ravindra Kapoor, Madan Puri, and Manorama in significant supporting roles. The film grossed Rs 3.6 crore in India, earning the label of a superhit. In 1979, Caravan was released in China and achieved blockbuster status there. It sold over 30 crore tickets in China, making it India’s biggest overseas hit at the time, with earnings exceeding Rs 30 crore.

Caravan’s success was significantly attributed to its soundtrack, crafted by the music director RD Burman and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. Iconic songs like ‘Chadti Jawani Meri Chaal Mastani’, ‘Dilbar Dil Se Pyare’, ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’, and ‘Kitna Pyara Wada Hai’ quickly gained classic status upon their release, contributing greatly to the film’s enduring popularity.

The Nasir Hussain-directed film was produced by his brother, Tahir Hussain. It’s fitting that Tahir’s legacy was upheld by his son, Aamir Khan, whose films such as 3 Idiots, Secret Superstar, and Dangal shattered records in China, emerging as some of the most significant foreign blockbusters in the country’s history.
