EXCLUSIVE: Khichdi 3 Confirmed: What To Expect From The Third Instalment; JD Majethia Shares Insights

The film is scheduled to release in 2027. The year will mark the 25th anniversary (silver jubilee) of the Khichdi television series.

Khichdi Release Date, Cast And Story: Every time one talks about the cult TV show Khichdi, memories of childhood where we would sit with the family and laugh our hearts out come flooding back. The show was later adapted into a film, with the first part ‘Khichdi: The Movie’ releasing in 2010. It was followed by the film’s second part, Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan, releasing in 2023. For all the fans of the show, there is good news. The popular film franchise is now returning with its third instalment and the official announcement was made by actor-producer JD Majethia, who plays the role of Himanshu in the film.

When asked about the details, Majethia exclusively tells News24, “It’s too early to talk about it as nothing’s finalised yet. The only thing that’s decided is that we want to do it and we will do it. Toh abhi mujhe nahi pata kya hoga, kaise hoga. The core cast will definitely return and we will get some new people as well.”

With time, audiences have become smart and their demands for the kind of content they watch have also matured. They no longer go for slapstick comedy. Does that create pressure to interweave socially relevant topics in the story of Khichdi so that it meets the expectations of the audience? Majethia tells us that when it comes to Khichdi, people don’t have such expectations. “Khichdi mein bas ek cheez ka dhyaan rakh lo ki family, friends should be able to sit together, watch and laugh their hearts out. Khichdi is sort of a party…a picnic for people. Toh message kya de rahe ho wo alag baat ho jaati hai.”

Explaining it further with an incident which happened when Khichdi was first aired on TV, Majethia shares, “When the show was first released in 2002, one of the initial episodes showed Jaishree getting Henna on her hands. This led to elderly women of the family raising objections as Jaishree was a widow. That episode talked about a very sensitive topic. Though it did not create any controversy in India and was, in fact, received well, I remember getting a mail from Pakistan regarding it.”

He goes on, “Back then, emailing was not common. But somebody from across the border made the effort to find out my email id and write to me about that particular episode. His mail read, “Sir, aapke show ke bahut fans hain Pakistan mein. Aapka wo episode bhi bahut accha tha aur issue bhi bahut relevant tha. Par wo sab issues hum har doosre show mein dekh hi lete hain. Khichdi hum isliye dekhte hain kyunki ise dekh kar hum hass paate hain. Toh is show mein aap bass hasaaiye. Ye sab mat kijiye. (Sir, your show has many fans in Pakistan. That episode of yours was also very good and the issue was very relevant too. But we get to see all those issues in every other show. We watch Khichdi because watching it makes us laugh. So in this show, please just make us laugh. Don’t do all this.)”

That’s the reason Majethia is clear that he wants to add a layer to the story that will talk about a certain topic, but the primary focus would always be making it humorous in every possible way.

The film is scheduled to release in 2027. The year will mark the 25th anniversary (silver jubilee) of the Khichdi television series,
