San Rechal, a 26-year-old model and social media influencer from Puducherry, allegedly committed suicide by consuming an overdose of medicines on Sunday. Rechal, who recently got married, was first rushed from her father’s house to a government hospital, then admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research), where doctors declared her dead.
Rechal won the Miss Puducherry crown in 2022 and gained national recognition by representing India in the Miss Africa Golden pageant in 2023. She openly raised her voice against racism in the fashion and film industry. She boldly used her social media platforms to challenge social notions about dark skin.

According to an NDTV report, the financial and personal stress may have contributed to her deteriorating mental health. Investigation has revealed that she had recently sold or mortgaged her jewellery to pursue her modelling career and was expecting financial help from her father, which she did not get.
Though a suicide note was found at the scene and stated that no one should be held responsible, a Tahsildar-level probe has been launched to examine any marital issues that might have played a role in her emotional decline.
