Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Issues His 1st Order From ED Lock-Up

Arvind Kejriwal reportedly issued his first directive from the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) custody today. Mr. Kejriwal, who was arrested by the ED on Thursday evening in connection with a money laundering case related to Delhi's former liquor policy, has been detained in the central agency's custody for a week.

Amid discussions about whether he can fulfill his duties as Delhi Chief Minister while in prison, Arvind Kejriwal reportedly issued his first directive from the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody today. According to sources, the directive was related to the water supply in the national capital. Kejriwal conveyed the order via a note to Delhi minister Atishi, who handles the relevant portfolio.

Mr. Kejriwal, who was arrested by the ED on Thursday evening in connection with a money laundering case related to Delhi’s former liquor policy, has been detained in the central agency’s custody for a week. The leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has refuted the accusations leveled against him and has accused the BJP-led central government of exploiting investigative agencies for political purposes.

Arvind Kejriwal Will Continue As Chief Minister

The AAP has confirmed that Mr. Kejriwal will remain Chief Minister despite his arrest. Although there is no legal prohibition, adherence to prison regulations will pose significant challenges. According to a former legal official from Delhi’s Tihar Jail, an inmate is permitted only two meetings per week.

Administering a government from jail presents challenges. As per the jail manual, interactions with family, friends, or associates are limited to twice a week, making governance difficult with such restrictions.

Nevertheless, there is a potential solution. Mr. Kejriwal could continue his role as Chief Minister if he secures permission to be placed under house arrest. However, this necessitates approval from Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
