A minor parking dispute in Delhi’s RK Puram area took a violent turn on Sunday night when a bike mechanic allegedly poured petrol on a man and set him on fire. The incident took place when the victim was sitting in his car. The injured man has been identified as Rahul Chauhan, who was rushed to the trauma centre by the police in a PCR van.
Delhi Police informed that on July 13, at around 9:30 pm, a PCR call was received at RK Puram police station that a bike mechanic in Sector-8 market had poured petrol on a man and set him on fire. After receiving the information, the police immediately reached the spot and the injured Rahul Chauhan was taken to the hospital.
Rahul’s cousin Siddhant Raj, who was present at the spot, said that Rahul (age 40, resident of Vasant village, who is a sanitation worker in the MCD) and two others were sitting in a Maruti Baleno car, which was parked near the shop of a bike mechanic named Gaya Prasad alias Kalu. Gaya Prasad asked him to move the vehicle, but Rahul declined. In a fit of rage, he poured petrol on Rahul. At the same time, cigarettes being smoked by people nearby caught fire, causing burn injuries to Rahul’s face and chest, and burning the car.
According to the police, Rahul has suffered 20% burn injuries and his statement has been recorded. Legal action is being taken against the accused Gaya Prasad alias Kalu, who runs a two-wheeler shop in Sector-8 market, under Section 109(1) of the BNS (earlier Section 307 of the IPC). The accused is 42-year-old and a resident of Palam Village, Delhi.
