Assam: The Election Commission of India on Thursday commissioned a meeting with Assam political parties over the draft of delimitation proposal for the state.

During the second day of public hearings, the Commission received a significant number of representations, totaling 645, from 13 districts in Assam. The districts that participated included Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Karimganj, Darrang, Hailakandi, Cachar, South Salmara, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Dhubri. Additionally, the Commission also heard representations from various political parties.

“The political parties that shared their feedback and suggestions during the hearings were the Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Bhartiya Janata Party, among others. State-level parties, such as the All India United Democratic Front, Asom Gana Parishad, United Peoples Party Liberal, and Bodoland People’s Front, also presented their views before the Commission,” ANI quoted ECI as saying.

“Apart from this, United Opposition Forum Assam (Assam Pradesh Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPM, Raijor Dal, CPI, Jatiya Dal Assam, NCP, RJD, Janata Dal (U), TMC, CPI(ML) and Others) and several Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs) also participated,” ECI said.

These public hearings and meetings with representatives from different sections of society, including political parties and civil society organizations, are taking place from July 19 to July 21, 2023, in Guwahati, Assam.

On the previous day, the Commission heard over 270 representations from nine districts, and the hearings are scheduled to continue the following day.
