Eight Dead In Andhra Pradesh Due To Floods And Landslides; High Alert In Telangana As Heavy Rainfall Continues

Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh have caused landslides and floods, resulting in eight deaths. The government is actively coordinating rescue efforts and advising residents to stay safe.

Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh have caused severe flooding and landslides, resulting in the deaths of eight people across Vijayawada and Guntur district. The intense downpours have led to widespread damage and major disruptions to daily life in these areas. As a result, neighboring Telangana is on high alert, preparing for additional rainfall in the coming days due to a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal.

In Vijayawada’s Moghalrajpuram Colony, a massive landslide occurred at the Sunnapubatty Center, triggered by the heavy downpour. A large portion of a hill collapsed onto several homes, demolishing one completely and killing four residents. The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Meghna, 29-year-old Bolem Lakshmi, 20-year-old Lalu, and 55-year-old Annapurna. The Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner, HM Dhyanachandra, confirmed these fatalities. The landslide also damaged three other houses, with ongoing risks of further landslides complicating rescue efforts.

Flood Claims Lives In Andhra Pradesh

Meanwhile, in Guntur district’s Pedakakani block, a flood swept away a car carrying a school teacher and two students in Uppalapadu village. The victims 38-year-old Nadumpalli Raghavendra, along with students Pashupuleti Saurish (6) and Koduri Manavith (9) were found after a thorough search. The teacher attempted to drive through the floodwaters, but the strong current overwhelmed the vehicle.

Rescue teams, hindered by heavy rain and unstable conditions, took over eight hours to recover the bodies from the landslide. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victims’ families and has instructed officials to evacuate people from vulnerable areas.

The continuous rainfall, with 187 mm recorded in Amaravati and Vijayawada in the past 24 hours, is due to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Department has warned of potentially very heavy rainfall in coastal areas. Efforts are underway to manage the crisis and ensure the safety of residents as the weather conditions persist.

State Sets Up Emergency Control Room

To manage rescue efforts, the Andhra Pradesh government has set up a state-level control room for emergencies, working with disaster and health agencies.

People needing urgent medical help should call the control room at +919032384168. A special team, led by Dr. Subrahmanyeswari +917386451239 and Dr. MV Padmaja +9183748935490, will handle emergency medical services at the control room until September 3, officials said.
