Gujarat School Teacher Living In US For 8 Years Continues To Draw Salary: Report

Despite her absence, Patel remains listed on the school's payroll. She visits Gujarat once a year during Diwali but does not engage with the school or students.

A head teacher from a government primary school in Banaskantha, Gujarat, who has been residing in the United States for the past eight years, has continued to receive a salary from the state government.

The situation came to light after complaints from students and villagers, who reported that the teacher, Bhavna Patel, had not been seen at the school for many years. Students currently in the fifth grade mentioned they last saw Patel when they were in the third grade.

Teacher Listed on Payroll Despite Absence

Despite her prolonged absence, Patel is still listed on the school’s payroll. She was the head of Pancha Primary School and has been living in Chicago since 2013, reportedly holding a US green card. Her name remains on the school’s roster even though she only visits Gujarat once a year during Diwali when the school is closed. However, she does not visit the school or interact with students during these visits.

No Action Taken Despite Reports

Parul Mehta, the in-charge principal, claimed that the issue had been reported to the taluka education officer, district education officer, and state education minister. However, no action has been taken yet.

Unpaid Leave and Show-Cause Notice

The primary education officer stated that Patel visited the school in January last year and has been on unpaid leave since this year. A show-cause notice has reportedly been issued to Patel, and disciplinary action is being sought against her.
