The Maharashtra government has withdrawn its earlier directive which mandated Hindi as the compulsory third language in Marathi and English-medium primary schools. A revised government resolution issued by the School Education Department now allows students from Classes 1 to 5 to choose any other Indian language in place of Hindi. Additionally, Marathi will continue to be a compulsory subject in all schools, irrespective of the medium.
What’s The Revised Directive?
According to the revised directive by the School Education Department, students from Classes 1 to 5 can opt for any other Indian language in place of Hindi. However, Hindi will be taught as third language in general.
The three-language formula will be adopted from class 1. If more than 20 students in a class want to learn other languages instead of Hindi, the teacher will make it available or the language subject will be taught online.
According to the State Curriculum Plan for School Education 2025, Hindi will now be the third language for Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools. However, if these students want to learn any one of the other Indian languages as a third language instead of Hindi, they will be allowed to learn it as a third language.
But there is a condition, which is the number of such students class-wise in their school should be at least 20. If at least 20 students show interest in learning the third language other than Hindi, a teacher will be provided to teach that language, otherwise it will be taught online.
Notably, for classes 6 to 10, the policy remains unchanged and will follow the existing provisions of the State Curriculum Framework.
