One Month After Pahalgam Terror Attack: Justice Still Elusive As Investigations Continue

In the wake of the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7, targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Today marks a somber milestone, one month since the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 25 tourists. The attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, has left families shattered and whole country in mourning, as questions surrounding justice and accountability remain unanswered.

In the wake of the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7, targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This military operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 100 terrorists. Yet, despite these retaliatory measures, the pressing questions linger: Have the victims’ families received justice? Has India truly avenged the heinous act? And where are the four perpetrators who orchestrated this brutal assault?

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took charge of the investigation shortly after the attack, but a month later, security agencies have yet to make significant progress in tracking down the attackers. Despite extensive search operations and a high-level probe involving multiple intelligence and enforcement agencies, the five terrorists believed to be responsible for the massacre remain at large.

Among those involved in the attack are three Pakistani terrorists linked to The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which has claimed responsibility for the targeted killings. In response to the urgency of the situation, authorities have announced a reward of Rs 20 lakh for credible information leading to the arrest of each of the terrorist.

NIA officials have been stationed in Pahalgam since the attack, conducting interrogation of over 500 individuals, including local pony handlers, shopkeepers, and tourists present at the scene. However, most were released due to a lack of incriminating evidence. Investigators are now sifting through digital data collected from the attack site, including photos and videos taken by tourists and family members of victims. A 3D mapping of Baisaran meadow has been completed based on eyewitness accounts to aid in their efforts.

Initial digital leads suggested potential communication between the terrorists prior to the attack, but investigators report that the suspects have since gone offline, complicating efforts to track their movements. Security officials believe that these attackers may have retreated into dense forested areas or utilized established escape routes to evade capture.

The challenges faced by law enforcement are compounded by the operational difficulties posed by Kashmir’s rugged terrain and the increasing sophistication of foreign terrorists who demonstrate advanced evasion tactics. The absence of actionable intelligence has raised concerns within the security establishment about the capabilities and training of these terrorists.

As families continue to grieve their loved ones, there is a growing demand for justice and accountability. The people remains united in its resolve to seek answers and ensure that such acts of violence do not go unpunished. With investigations ongoing and security measures heightened, Pahalgam stands as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity, as officials work tirelessly to bring those responsible for this tragic event to justice.
