New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief on the passing away of former chairperson of Nagaland State Commission for Women, renowned writer and Padma Shri Dr Temsula Ao on Sunday night.

Dr Temsula Ao passed away at a private hospital in Dimapur, Nagaland at the age of 80.

“Saddened by the passing away of Dr Temsüla Ao, who played a pivotal role in popularising the wonderful Naga culture through her literary works, the Prime Minister tweeted on Monday morning.

“Her efforts in the fields of education and culture were noteworthy. Condolences to her family and friends. May her soul rest in peace,” he added.

Born on October 25, 1945, Ao was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2007.

Among other recognitions, she also received the Sahitya Akademi Award for her short story collection and was also a recipient of Nagaland Governor’s Award for Distinction in Literature.

She is also remembered as one of the major literary voices in English from the Northeast. Her work has also been translated into German, French, Assamese, Bengali and Hindi.

She retired from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 2010 as professor of English and dean of School of Humanities and Education. She started her teaching career with the university in 1975.
