WATCH | Part Of Guwahati Airport Ceiling Collapses Due To Rainfall, Hailstorm

During the unfavorable weather conditions, a sizable tree was uprooted, blocking the road leading to the airport, which led the airport authority to halt operations and reroute six flights to different destinations. Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, shared details of the flight diversions with ANI.

Guwahati Airport: Amidst severe storm and heavy rainfall in Guwahati on Sunday, a section of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport’s ceiling collapsed, while part of the roof outside the terminal building was also blown away. Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati owned by Gautam Adani.

Amidst the adverse weather conditions, a large tree was uprooted, obstructing the road to the airport, prompting the airport authority to suspend operations and divert six flights to alternative destinations. Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, informed ANI about the flight diversions.

“One large tree uprooted, blocking a road to the airport, but it was promptly cleared to ensure smooth fuel supply,” Baruah stated. He also mentioned water leakage inside the airport due to overflowing outlet pipes.

“A portion of the exterior roof sealing was blown away, but the situation is now under control,” he added, with the Guwahati airport authority confirming that operations have returned to normal.

“Flight operations were affected due to heavy downpours and wind, with the approach road blocked by uprooted trees. Despite water seepage and a minor ceiling collapse, no injuries were reported. Six flights were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. Operations have now resumed,” stated an official statement.

IMD Predicts More Heavy Rains In Assam

The severe weather conditions triggered continuous rainfall and hailstorms in various parts of Assam, resulting in damage to properties and crops. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted ongoing rainfall and thunderstorms across Northeast India until April 4, with heavy rainfall expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura over the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in Assam and Meghalaya until April 4, according to the IMD.
