Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Mumbai, Southwest Monsoon Withdraws

The Indian Meteorological Department, or IMD, has issued several heavy weather warnings across various districts of Maharashtra.

Weather News: IMD in its press release on Monday said that the Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from parts of West Rajasthan and Kachchh from September 23, a bit later than the date of September 17. The IMD further said conditions are conducive to the monsoon withdrawal from more areas of West Rajasthan, along with parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat within the next 24 hours.

Earlier, the weather agency had predicted the onset of southwest monsoon withdrawal from the country between September 19 and 25. Normally, the monsoon reaches Kerala on June 1 and spreads across the country by July 8, but this year, it reached Kerala a week prior to May 30. The monsoon usually begins withdrawing from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15.

As the monsoon withdrawal begins, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an alert for intensified rainfall. It has forecasted cumbersome to hefty showers in Coastal and North Interior Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa in the next three days. Heavy rain showers are predicted in central, eastern, and northeastern India between September 24-27.

These thunderstorms, heavy rains, lightning, and windstorm conditions have thus been categorized at two levels orange and yellow-to reflect the intensity of the weather in different areas.
