Can Teams Retain The Replacements For Players Who Left IPL Mid-Way? Here Are Rules For The Temporary Replacements

The IPL franchise teams will be able to contract temporary replacements for the final stage of the reorganized 2025 season

The IPL franchise teams will be able to contract temporary replacements for the final stage of the reorganized 2025 season, but the players will not be qualified for retention before the next auction. The IPL’s rules allow the teams to hire replacements in the case of players getting ill or hurt, and this can be done only before or during their 12th game of the season. However, the league has responded to the call to change those rules, allowing the signing of temporary replacements for the rest of this rearranged season.

What Did The League Say?

Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” the league said.

“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026,” the league added.

Why IPL Will Not Keep These Players?

Any stop gaps who come in after the forcing of league to stop will not be able to be retained prior to next season. The move apparently aims to prevent a situation whereby the franchises are in effect incentivised to proceed to sign replacements as a method to find their way around the auction procedure as opposed to genuine circumstances.

Players Who Can Be Retained

The IPL also cleared that all the replacements which were approved before the suspension of the league are allowed to be retained for the next season. Four players were acquireed in 48 hours prior to suspension: Sediqullah Atal (Delhi Capitals), Mayank Agarwal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger (both Rajasthan Royals).
