What Happened To Vinod Kambli? Kapil Dev Offers Help On One Condition

Team mates of the 1983 World Cup-winning team have stepped up to offer their help to Vinod Kambli.

Vinod Kambli has lately been spotted at the memorial event of famous coach Ramakant Achrekar, and a very significant concern has been expressed through the video that did all things viral in which a weak and frail Kambli is seen clinging on to his old friend Sachin Tendulkar as if not wanting to let go of his hand. This emotional moment increased the anxiety of fans and former teammates who were already concerned about his well-being. The video, which went viral on social media, shows Kambli clinging to Tendulkar during their reunion, even as the event continued around them. This only added to the earlier concerns raised by another viral video from August, where Kambli was seen struggling to walk.

Kambli Suffering With Several Health Issues

“He has severe, multiple health issues,” revealed Marcus Couto, a former first-class umpire who is close to Kambli, to Times of India.

“There’s no point in him going for rehab—Kambli has already gone to rehab 14 times! Thrice we took him to a rehab in Vasai.” After the August video, Couto and his brother Ricky paid a visit to Kambli at his Bandra home, expressing serious concern about his continued health issues and battle with addiction.

Kapil Dev Willing To Help Vinod Kambli Only If…

“Kapil (Dev, captain of the 1983 team) has told me clearly that if he wants to go to rehab, then we are willing to help him financially,” said former India seamer Balwinder Singh Sandhu.

“However, he has to check into rehab himself first. Only if he does that, we are ready to foot the bill, irrespective of how long the treatment lasts,” Sandhu added.

Vinod Kambli’s Alcohol Addiction

Despite Kambli’s well-documented struggles with alcohol addiction, which have caused a rift with many of his former colleagues, support has come from an unlikely source. Team mates of the 1983 World Cup-winning team have stepped up to offer their help. However, they’ve made it clear that Kambli needs to be willing to take the first step toward recovery.

The 1983 team had previously rallied in support of the erstwhile opener and coach, Anshuman Gaekwad, during his cancer bout, so there’s really nothing to expect in response from this close-knit lot now that Kambli has come back in town.
