Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked major speculation about his retirement after Portugal’s win over Spain in UEFA Nations League. The 40-year old has was seen clearly emotional after he clinched the title with 5-3 win on penalties at the Allianz Arena in Munich which was followed by a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Ronaldo played a very important role in the final and scored Portugal’s second goal in the 61st minute with a strong finish from the deflected cross by Nuno Mendes.
Post-match, Ronaldo opened up and mentioned that he played the final with an injury and for the national team he is willing to play with a broken leg as well. He also addressed the speculations regarding his retirement and he hopes to play as long as he stays free from serious injuries.
“You know how old I am already. Obviously, I’m closer to the end than I was at the beginning, but I have to enjoy every moment. If I don’t get seriously injured, I’ll keep going,” Ronaldo told reporters after the UEFA Nations League win.
“I have many titles with my clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. These are tears. It’s mission accomplished and so much joy,” Ronaldo said about Portugal’s win.
“I had already felt it during the warmup, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it. It’s for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all,” said Ronaldo.
“I have lived in many countries, I have played for many clubs, but when it’s about Portugal, it is always a special feeling,” he added.
Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal and led Portugal towards victory in UEFA Nations League.
