The home defeat of Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders resulted in severe criticism of MS Dhoni and the entire CSK team from former cricketers and fans during the IPL on Saturday (CSK vs KKR). The criticism against them grew even stronger since their recent defeat. Virender Sehwag the former Indian opening batsman used his previous pattern to criticize Dhoni for a second time. After the match loss Sehwag questioned how Dhoni added value to the team.

Sehwag maintained that the team’s performance would remain similar even when Dhoni lost his wicket at a bad time. Dhoni took his second batting appearance at position nine during the match but hit only one run before Sunil Narine dismissed him in four balls.

The Star Sports anchor Jatin Sapru asked Dhoni whether he believed there was room for improvement in his finish of the game during the post-match broadcast. According to Sehwag he did not believe there would have been a meaningful difference. The team would have accumulated a maximum of 130 runs even if Dhoni had not left the crease early. KRK managed to achieve the target of 104 runs through a chase lasting just 10.1 overs. If we appeared on air later by 30 minutes then our broadcast would have been the only variation. After Sehwag made his comment Aakash Chopra interrupted with “Straight talk, no nonsense.” Sehwag delivered his statement without any deceit as it shut down all opposing arguments.
Dhoni’s performance so far
Dhoni has amassed 104 runs while batting in six innings at an average of 34.66 during IPL 2025 with a strike rate of 146.47. Among the Chennai batters Vijay Shankar exists only below him in batting average which stands at 54.50. The statistics from the team provoke fan frustration instead of fulfillment due to their overall underperforming outcomes.
Can CSK bounce back?
The main question on the minds of Chennai supporters at this juncture is how the team can stage a successful comeback. The ninth position on the points table belongs to CSK due to its six matches and five consecutive defeats run.
