Rohit Sharma ceases to lead India’s Test squad as national selectors select a fresh captain to steer the side in their upcoming England tour, which begins next month. Test cricket experts continue to question whether Rohit Sharma will join the England tour as an opening batsman specialist. According to The Indian Express, the Indian cricket board has announced support for the selectors’ recent decision to remove Rohit Sharma from team captaincy.

“The selectors’ thought process is clear. They want a new leader for the England tour and Rohit doesn’t fit in as a captain, especially considering his red-ball form. They want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle and the selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit won’t lead the team,” a source in the Indian board informed The Indian Express.
The national selectors believe Rohit Sharma’s red-ball cricket performances dictated this leadership change despite his continued role in ODI teams. India will use the 38-year-old player in their ODI plans, according to reports. The decision-makers are committed to avoiding a repetition of the Australian tour instability experienced during India’s tour of that nation. Despite facing struggles in the previous series where he averaged 6.20 across five matches, Rohit chose to withdraw from the final Test competition. During the New Zealand test series at home last year, Rohit’s batting averages remained only at 15.16 across three Tests.

Poor recent form
Rohit stayed in India during Australia’s first Test in Perth in 2020 because his second child was born then. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul started the innings. After the second Test, he chose to move down the batting order before resuming his opening spot for Melbourne’s Boxing Day game, then decided not to play in Sydney.
