Rohit Sharma All Set To Lead Team India Once Again, As BCCI Plans Major Workload Arrangement !

With the 2027 ODI World Cup still two years from now, the team management seems intent on retaining stability in leadership while managing player workloads judiciously.

In contrast to the recent rumours of a change in leadership in Indian cricket, new reports now indicate that Rohit Sharma will remain Team India’s ODI captain at least for the near term. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still two years from now, the team management seems intent on retaining stability in leadership while managing player workloads judiciously.

As per a report by Sports Tak, as quoted by News18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not want to rush into broad changes to the leadership hierarchy. Rather, Rohit Sharma will most probably captain the Indian team in the three-match ODI series against Australia in October 2025.

Players Might Be Rested

The report also suggests that Test skipper Shubman Gill, who has been in sensational form in the ongoing Test series against England, might be rested for the series to pace his workload. Likewise, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant – three of whom have been coming back from the same series might be given a break as well to make sure they come back absolutely fit and fresh for the next tasks.

The move is reportedly part of a wider workload planning plan in the buildup to a congested cricket schedule featuring World Test Championship games and 2026 T20 World Cup preparations.

Rohit Still Central to India’s ODI Plans

Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from Test cricket, is still dedicated to white-ball cricket. After taking India to the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph and leading the team to victory at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit has again confirmed his intent to captain the team at the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Internal sources of the team feel that Rohit’s experience of a lifetime, strategic awareness, and level-headedness under pressure qualify him best for leading the side further as India gradually approaches the transition phase slowly but surely.

Transition of Leadership Will Be Time-Consuming

Though Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant are all considered likely future leaders, the BCCI seems in no hurry. The emphasis continues to be on developing them for extended roles without upsetting the balance of the present team.

The supporters might have to wait somewhat longer to witness a change of guard at captaincy, as presently Rohit Sharma is still at the center of India’s white-ball aspirations.
