Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were expected to make one final appearance in Test cricket for India during the tour of England. However, their sudden decision to retire from the format before the series began came as a shock to fans and analysts alike. With both players already having stepped away from T20 internationals, ODIs remain the only format where they will continue to represent India – at least for now.
Gavaskar doubtful of Virat and Rohit’s 2027 WC Participation
While Kohli has openly declared his ambition to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup, and Rohit’s commitment to the 50-over format is well known, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has cast doubt on the likelihood of either making it to the marquee event.
Speaking to Sports Today on May 12, Gavaskar acknowledged the duo’s stellar track record in ODIs but emphasized that their participation in the 2027 World Cup will ultimately depend on how selectors view their form and fitness over the next few years.
“They’ve been phenomenal performers in ODIs,” Gavaskar said. “But the selection committee will consider whether they can maintain that level of performance all the way to 2027. If the selectors believe they can still contribute significantly, they’ll be included. Otherwise, it’s unlikely.”
When asked to give his personal opinion, Gavaskar didn’t hold back.
“To be honest, I don’t think they’ll be part of the 2027 World Cup squad,” he stated. “But then again, if they hit top form in the next year or so – scoring centuries consistently – then even divine intervention wouldn’t keep them out of the team.”
As of now, both Kohli and Sharma remain active in the ODI setup, but whether they’ll be around for the next World Cup remains a big question – one that time and performance will ultimately answer.
