Bumrah Honored at Lord’s, But Relishes Memories Over Milestones

The five-wicket haul secured Bumrah a prized place on the Lord’s Honours Board, a milestone for any cricketer. But, for the 31-year-old, it is not the records which are most important to him – it is the memories.

Looking back at his favorite Test memory, Bumrah transported everyone to the 2021 Lord’s Test, which is still very close to his heart. In the game, Bumrah had been wicketless in the first innings and got out for a duck. However, things changed in the second innings when he shared an unbeaten 89-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Mohammed Shami, getting 34 off 64 deliveries in a gritty knock.

Shami’s whirlwind 56 and Bumrah’s courage helped India set up a fighting total. The pair not only infuriated England but also laid the platform for a thrilling comeback. Bumrah subsequently returned with the ball, taking 3/33 as India bowled England out in under 60 overs to seal a historic 151-run win.

“I don’t actually think a lot about records,” said Bumrah. “For me, the most special game was when Shami bhai and I shared a partnership and won the game. Being on the Honours Board is special one day I can take it out and display it to my son but those are more important memories to me.”

Handling Pressure and Judgment with Grace

Back in action after having been rested for the second Test as part of workload management, Bumrah quietened critics with a scorching spell at Lord’s, his maiden five-wicket haul at the iconic ground.

Unfazed and unmoved by all the speculation surrounding his performance and well-being, Bumrah continues to stay humble.

“When you play for India, you’re always in the limelight. You’ll be criticized each day, each match,” he observed. “Even Sachin sir was criticized after 200 Tests. So I’ve accepted it. That’s being a professional sportsperson.”

Bumrah accepted that criticism is part of playing in the Indian jersey, but his sole concern continues to be delivering his best whenever he takes to the ground.

“As long as I’m playing, I’ll be judged. But I’m not affected by it. My job is to contribute to the team. And when that happens, it feels good.”
