Canada Election 2025: Who Is Mark Carney? Liberal Party Leader And Economist Set To Become PM

Mark Carney entered the race to become Canada’s next Prime Minister in January following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. He is a Harvard University graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has projected win for Mark Carney’s Liberal Party in the 45th Federal Election. The party led by Carney is projected to win more of the 343 seats in Parliament than the Conservatives (opposition). However, it remains unclear whether the Liberals will secure parliamentary majority or not. Canada headed to election on Monday, with two choices; whether to give another term to Prime Minister Mark Carney (Liberal Party) or pass the baton to the Conservatives. If Liberals win this election, they will secure historic fourth term. As of the latest updates, sitting PM Carney has retained his seat in Ottawa.

Who Is Mark Carney?

Mark Carney entered the race to become Canada’s next Prime Minister in January following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. He is the first non-Briton to lead the Bank of England since its founding in 1694 and Canada’s central bank’s former governor. He had taken over from Trudeau, who resigned towards the end of his term after his party lost faith in him.

Born on March 16, 1965, Mark Joseph Carney is a Canadian economist and politician. He was born in Fort Smith of Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton of Alberta. He is a Harvard University graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in October 2007. He worked as an adviser to former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the COVID-19 pandemic. Carney was also made chair of the Liberal Party’s economic growth taskforce. His wife is Diana Fox, a British economist who he met at Oxford. The couple has four children. Carney has never held elected office and is not a Member of Parliament.

The federal election was fought amid Tariff threats from United States President Donald Trump and his call to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. The election was held earlier than scheduled after Carney dissolved Parliament and sought a fresh mandate.
He had requested Canadians to support and entrust him in tough time under US’s trade actions. Carney described it as “the most significant crisis of his lifetime, due to President Donald Trump’s trade actions and his threats to sovereignty.” It seems that he was able to convince Canadians that he led the country through Trump’s trade war due to his strong background on dealing with financial turmoil.

Earlier during a campaign, he stated that he is useful at a time of crisis. “I’m most useful in a crisis. I’m not that good at peacetime,” he said, highlighting his role during challenging times.

His win in first ballot as a PM after Trudeau’s resignation was unprecedented in Canadian history, as he never served in Parliament. He had defeated former cabinet minister Karina Gould, former finance minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, and Businessman and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis.

As the voting concluded, he took to X to thank everyone for making this election campaign successful. “The polls are now closed. For 37 days, in every corner of this country, our team worked to build a stronger Canada. Thank you to everyone who put so much into this campaign,” wrote Carney on X.
