Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the margins of the G7 Summit in Alberta. The two leaders agreed to resume full diplomatic services, marking an end to the diplomatic row that began with Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in 2023. Both countries underscored the importance of their diplomatic relations, signaling an intent to improve their previously soured ties.
After brief talks, India and Canada agreed to appoint new high commissioners. On his meeting with PM Modi, the Canadian PM said, “We will move to appoint High Commissioners again.” Speaking at the Summit, Carney said, “I think today’s meeting was important. I would describe it as foundational, a necessary first step: an exchange of views, a frank, open exchange of views around law enforcement and transnational repression, as two examples, agreement to provide the necessary foundations to begin rebuilding a relationship based on mutual respect, sovereignty, and trust. We will move to appoint High Commissioners again.”

At the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, the two leaders discussed the countries’ strong historic ties, partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, partnerships in economic growth, supply chains, etc. PM Mark Carney also emphasized that PM Modi has been attending every G7 Summit since 2018. Meanwhile, he called it a “reflection of the size of the Indian economy, the dynamism of the Indian economy, Indian technology, and the leadership position India plays in its host of venues from the G20 and beyond. “
He further stated, “So, as Chair of the G7, hosting the Prime Minister in that context is entirely natural, entirely consistent. I fully expect the Prime Minister of India to be in attendance at the G7 in France next year…” On the other hand, PM Modi on Wednesday took to his X, stating, “Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues. We remain committed to furthering global peace, prosperity, and sustainability.”
